Proserpina

March 2009
Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space Mini Theatre 2

Festival/Tokyo 09 Spring, Theater/University program

One day, when she is collecting flowers in heaven, spring goddess Proserpina is abducted by King Pluto and forced to marry him and live with him in Hades. In desperation her mother, the goddess of fertility, stopped the growth on earth. Once every year, when Proserpina was allowed to return to heaven , spring returned to earth, bringing good harvests again.

This play was written by German literary master Goethe in the motif of Roman mythology, and translated by Yukio Mishima into an extraordinary monologue. The Myth of the repose of the souls travels across time and space, linking unnoticed to the distorted phantom killings of Akihabara.

Combining pop animation, dance and percussion with the dark monologue lamenting over her misfortune in the after-world, the story of an abruptly claimed life appears with parallels to contemporary Tokyo.
